The Dark Knight Rises Thoughts

With Mr. Heath Ledger's unfortunate passing, I thought we might never see again the golden reign of fantastic Christopher Nolan Batman films, his films portraying the black crusader of the night in a more realistic, more character driven manner, even if his voice sounds like he just smoked a pack of Winston. But then I heard of Nolan's development of The Dark Knight Rises, and I was overjoyed. Even though he said this would be the final film in his Batman film series, I am still holding a tight grip in suspense, thinking of what he is planning on doing with the characters, the story, and how he will make the entire Batman story arc come full circle. I still think it's quite a bummer that we will not be seeing other villains in the film like the Joker, Two-Face, Ra's Al Ghul, and not even the Riddler, but gosh darn, Bane and Catwoman! ME-OW! So far, I am liking the direction this film is going in, and I can't wait to see Batman get into a royal rumble with these classic comic book foes!

At first, I was a bit intrigued as to why they would pick Tom Hardy for the character of Bane, the muscular, yet sadistic Gotham adversary who is infamously known for breaking Batman's back in Batman #497. Hardy himself  , in my humble opinion, just doesn't seem buff enough to play such a massive character, even if his voice is somewhat reminiscent to Bane's voice on Batman: The Animated Series. But, hey, Nolan's films portray Batman in a real life atmosphere, so I am interested in how they will turn Hardy into the character, whose earlier film adaptations make him look like a bumbling idiot rather than a criminal who struggles with himself, physically and mentally. Perhaps Hardy will start out in the beginning of the film as a puny, skinny man who falls under the influence of drug dealers, who persuade him to take several steroids, which in result, turns him into a macho, macho man crusher who can smash Batman into a pulp. But who knows, looks like Hardy will have to pump lots of iron to make his biceps about the size of a watermelon. Just look at the picture of Bane above, all of his biceps are bigger than Catwoman's head!

Speaking of Catwoman, I am quite excited for Anne Hathaway's upcoming portrayal as Selina Kyle, who's anger and lust for power leads her into becoming the fearsome Catwoman. As a huge fan of Tim Burton's Batman Returns, I can honestly say that Michelle Pfeiffer did a great job with her portrayal as the dark lady, who has claws as sharp as knives, and a whip to strangle the Bat with. But I highly doubt they will incorporate the whole 9 lives concept into the film since it's a more realistic take on the character, and let's pray that they don't slaughter the character's dignity as they did in the 2004 film with Halle Berry. I think Hathaway will make a fine Catwoman, for she is a character with acting skills that fit the character quite well. I am also curious as to what they will do with the costume of Catwoman. Will they make it a sticked black leather material as they did in Burton's film, or will they make it a resourceful, bullet proof armored suit as they did with Batman. Either way, Catwoman is a character I truly suspected would make an appearance in a Christopher Nolan Batman film, and I am sure that the brilliant visionary that brought us thrillers like Inception and The Dark Knight will come up with a complex, yet satisfying way to develop the character and make her a solid villain.

But other than the Bat-tastic villains that will make an appearance in this film, I am also curious to see other divine actors play distinct characters in the final chapter of the Batman saga. Joseph Gordan Levitt, who has starred with Tom Hardy in Inception, will be playing a Gotham Cop named John Blake. When I first heard that he would be making an appearance in this film, I was interested as to what character he would be playing. I thought for sure that he would be playing the Riddler, and making the villains in this film a triumvirate, but they have decided to make him an entirely new character exclusive to this film. I think it's a good idea, and I think they will develop the character just as well as they did Commissioner Gordan in the first two films as well as Harvey Dent in the previous film, making him a noble ally to Batman and helping him take out the enemies that get in his way. I also hear that Marion Cotillard will be playing Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprise board member and possibly a love interest to Bruce Wayne. I think what will happen in the film is that Bruce will struggle in deciding which woman he loves more, as he struggles with developing feelings for Selina Kyle and Miranda Tate. What a great part of the character's development that would make, for we constantly see not only Bruce Wayne deal with that throughout films, comics and TV shows, but many other heroes as well, such as Spider-Man. Heck, just look at the fiasco he went through with Mary Jane and Gwen Stacey in Spider-Man 3!

Overall, I think The Dark Knight Rises will be just as spectacular as The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, and I am looking forward to seeing how Nolan develops the story and drives the epic tale of the Dark Knight even further. I think it will be a great movie, despite some of the things that I was disappointed about not being in the film, and perhaps Nolan will change his mind and make a fourth and fifth film eventually. How incredible would that be to see Batman go up against classic enemies like the Riddler, Clayface, the Penguin Man-Bat, and Mr. Freeze. And hey, just for the heck of it, they could through in Egghead from the 60s TV show and have him annoy today's darker, more serious Batman with his ridiculous egg puns. Vincent Price would be proud!

By the way, do you think Wayne Manor is finished by the point of the third film. It would be awesome to see Batman lurk about down in the Batcave, developing new software and machinery to use in his never ending fight against crime. And after seeing the rusty hunk of junk, the Tumbler, bit the dust in the epic climax of The Dark Knight, maybe Lucius Fox will design a more iconic, more civilized version of the Batmobile, fit will high tech gadgets and butt-kicking rocket boosters to send villains running home to mommy. Let's just hope the Penguin doesn't take control of it like he did in Batman Returns.
