Some of My Favorite Villains From Literature

Villains can have a profound impact on story, character development and morals told through some ofthe greatest tales ever written. So here is my list of my top 10 villains from literature. Now, as you all know, I have just posted a list of movie villains, so now I thought it might interest you if I gave you a list of villains from some of my favorite books. Enjoy!

10. The Wicked Witch of the West

Okay, so she topped my Top Ten Movie Villains list two weeks ago, but she deserves a spot on this villains list. In many ways, the Witch can be contrasted from her appearance in the 1939 film. In the film, she has puke green skin, and wears black, but in the book, she is very pale, elderly, and carries an umbrella instead of a broomstick. As vile as can be, the witch tried her best to keep Dorothy and her friends away from her village, such as setting crows, bees and wolves on them. But in the end, the nefarious Witch was brought down by a simple bucket of water and melted to a syrup of yellow flem.

9. The White Witch

Straight from that cult classic book, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, the White Witch really know how to make us grind our teeth and get very angry. So sinister and cruel, she tried to make the four children, Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan fall down in defeat. Turning her prisoners into blocks of ice, she does not take a chance, and does not take mercy. As much as I dislike her, she deserves a spot on this list, with a delicious box of enchanted turkish delight.

8. Count Dracula

Another villain from my other top ten villains list, the Dracula in the novel is much more sinister, gruesome and displays a much greater deal of goard then the one in the Dracula films that would follow in the next couple decades. Straight from Transylvania, Dracula was thirsty for blood, and like the White Witch, took no chances with his victims. And I just love the way Bram Stoker displays the character. He makes the character development of the character so well, that it almost seems real, and makes anyone reading the book, scared out of their seat, and makes them spill their coffee all over the kitchen floor.

7. The Aliens from War of the  Worlds

Sinister beings from another planet, the aliens terrorized Victorian England in Herbert George Wells’ famous novel. With their unusual powers, this aliens caused mass destruction and death for many people. In fact, in the 1940s, a radio production of the story was told by the great Orson Welles, and for those who were tuning in to the play at the time, they thought it was real, and a lot of chaos and confusion was formed. But not matter what, I had to put these guys on my list.

6. Shere Khan

This is one kitty you do not want to mess with. Shere Khan, from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book was fierce, vicious and cruel to all the enemies in the jungle. When the book was later turned into a movie, the great George Sanders (who portrayed Mr. Freeze on the 60s Batman tv show) to give Shere Khan the evil zest he needed. With sharp claws and a taste for death, theis tiger surely is a great adition to my top ten list.

5. Uncle Ebenezar

The sinister and hateful uncle from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped, this relative of the main character David Balfour, was vile, evil and a terrible soul. He tries his best to kill his nephew, and succeeds to pushing him aboard the ship, the Covenant in an attempt to enslave him. Now I just got done reading the book, and I must say, I am quite satisfyed. This book was a joy to read, and with the retched Uncle Ebenezar at the head of tyranny, it was a major milestone.

4. Mr. Hyde

Ah, yes, a true classic. Though he was also the kind hearted Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde was strange, bizarre, and unique to most readers. I love how he is nice Dr. Jekyll at one part, and the evil Mr. Hyde at another. From The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (also written by Robert Louis Stevenson), he really know how to put the insanity in the villain sandwich. And this list would not be possibly without him.

3. Long John Silver.

This old jewel stealing fool has become so famous, they even named a seafood restaurant after him. From yet another book written by Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island, Long John Silver tried to play nice with the young main character named Jim, but the young Jim was determined to succeed. Even though he only had one leg, he was sinister and a mutant of all literature. And he is truly one of my favorites. Without him, we would not have such good pirates like Captain Jack Sparrow or Davy Jones. He makes is way into the third spot of my top ten list.

2. Captain Hook

From J.M. Barrie’s beloved book, Peter Pan and Wendy, Captain Hook made Peter Pan’s life a living hell. During a sword fight, Peter somehow severed Hook’s hand, and how the sinister James Hook is determined to kill Peter, as well as those who get in his way, such as the greatful Lost Boys and Wendy and her brothers. And there are so many quilities make him so much better then the one in the Disney films. With his sidekick Smee and his infamous band of pirates, Hook was broad and brave, even though he was evil and afraid of clocks.

And Number 1 is……

1. Frankenstein’s Monster

Now I know what some of you are thinking. I should have put him on my top ten movie villains list, but to tell you the truth, I am not such a big fan of the monster in the film. They turn an obsessive, talkative, monster into a dopey, stupid and harmless fool. And he was nothing like that in the book, he was strong and monsterous, and murdered many people in Mary Shelley’s beloved novel. Composed of dead organs, tissue, and other reminents, Frankenstein’s monster was classic, and tops my list as the Number One Literature Villain of all time. And he is a great simple of horror, death, and makes a great Halloween costume.
